GREYTON COMMUNITY INITIATIVES

The Mustard Seed Project

The Mustard Seed Project mainly comprises a Feeding Scheme for children in Genadendal and the building of a Safe House in Heuwelkroon, both sites adjacent to Greyton.

WE ARE ABOUT :

Feeding the hungryCaring for abused childrenEducating the illiterate

FEEDING SCHEME

The Feeding Project is going well from a start with about 30 “difficult” children being fed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to the present situation of feeding over 500 needy children at the L.R.Schmidt junior in Genadendal.

The scheme has proved very beneficial to all participants with the full support of the Headmaster of the school and the school staff.

GREYTON GENADENDAL EDUCATION FUND

The Greyton Genadendal Education Fund supports about 35 senior school pupils in grades 9 to 12 with payment of their school registration fees and educational outings. Selection is based on low family income and academic performance which should be above class average. Many pupils from this group achieve matric results that enable them to enter tertiary institutions.

THE “KRUISHUIS” SAFE HOUSE

The building is situated on a plot we have bought with a beautiful view south-westwards up the Riviersonderend valley. Our vision for the multi-purpose building that will:

  • Be open to any abused child
  • Protect and comfort in the love and knowledge of Christ
  • Serve as a daily feeding centre for children
  • Double as a play/rest/educational/training facility
  • Be adaptable for any circumstance so never to be a “white elephant”
  • Provide a conduit for the local Christian community to be able to contribute voluntarily in time and money
Roadside Soups

Roadside Soups provide a warm meal to the elderly once a week. It is run by three concerned people in the village, who buy the ingredients and pay capable ladies to do the cooking. The initiative is sponsored by businesses and indivuals in Greyton who donate funds and ingredients.

After meeting with other important role-players in the area, namely the Red Cross and the Nutrition Centre, it became obvious as to how much these groups contribute to the community and how we could assist each other.

For example, there are four Nutrition Centres, namely in Greyton, Genadendal, Voorstekraal and Bereaville. These Centres have been supplying soup and meals to approx. 350 people in the area and require aid from Social Development.

The Red Cross

The Overberg Red Cross is based In Greyton. It works extensively in the community of the Sonderend Valley, supplying health care, guidance, safety for abused people, hospice care.
