“We are Dianne and Brian Dawes from the UK, now farming grapes and making wines in South Africa. We planted our vines in 2008 to 2010 and we now have one hectare (3000) Tempranillo vines and one hectare (3000) Viognier vines. Our gently sloping vineyard faces north-east towards the beautiful Riviersonderend mountain range just 8 km outside Greyton in the Western Cape. We farm organically and make our wines as naturally as possible. Our aim is to produce 10 – 12000 bottles per year from our own vines in our cellar, which is located underneath our home. We chose Tempranillo and Viognier for a variety of reasons. The first reason is that these varietals are rarely grown in South Africa and, as a boutique winery, we can’t possibly compete with the huge wine farms of the Western Cape who are producing millions of bottles of Chenin Blanc, Chardonay. Sauvingnon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvingnon etc. at knock down prices – there is no sense in that for us. Finally, although we have a small rain-water dam, this area of the Western Cape has a Mediterranean climate – cool wet winters and long hot summers – well suited to Tempranillo and Viognier vines.”
